MathThink^TM program is designed to be an after-school math program using the cognitive model of instruction. The focus of the MathThink program is to prepare students for mainstream mathematics classes, using cognitive methodologies creating and developing academic concepts associated with mathematics requirements as expressed in the state of California Standards and Mathematics Framework. The heart of the program includes direct classroom instruction assisted by a web-based learning platform.

As part of the teaching philosophy / practice, the students are asked to:
* Define and clarify the problem
* Experiment, reflect, apply examples, and
* Solve the problem or draw conclusions

All the MathThink Classes are structured with a limited number of students and in a manner that allows for cooperative learning. The rationale for small group learning is based on the theory that an intervention program must be conducted with a limited class size that allows for direct guidance by the instructor. The classes are designed to form the creation of a series of “knowledge puzzles” encouraging students to discover answers to the concepts.

A variety of scaffolding techniques are used by the instructor within each group. However, the process of self analysis and discovery is the main focus of the instruction within the group and the written materials (workbooks, diagrams and puzzles) emphasize that focus.
